Property crimes account for eighty-five percent of all crime – one percent higher than the national average. Violent crimes account for fifteen percent of all crime – twenty-seven percent higher than the national average. In 2007, Michigan was named the eleventh most dangerous state in the nation, down one spot from twelfth the previous year. Detroit, the largest city in Michigan and the tenth largest city in America, was named the most dangerous city in the country. With a population of nearly one million, Detroit ranks sixth in the number of violent crimes among the twenty-five largest cities in the U.S. Some criticize these numbers, the formula that determines them, and the impression that they give. The city of Detroit is referred to by many familiar nicknames. The Michigan cities of Grand Rapids, Pontiac, and Detroit are all major automobile manufacturing centers. Detroit is known as the automobile capital of the world, because it is home to General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, hence the nickname Motor City. The song Detroit Rock City, performed by the rock band Kiss, gave way to the nickname Rock City. Incidentally, the song can be heard at Tigers and Red Wings games. Motown, a word derived from a blend of the words motor and town, was a popular record label that was based in Detroit. Artists such as the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, and Diana Ross made records under the Motown label. Motown was not only a record label. It was a distinctive sound – soul music with a pop influence. Although the record label left Michigan, the name stayed. Michigan is still known as Motown. Michigan criminal records indicate that although the Detroit Metro area is crime infested, downtown Detroit is becoming much safer – thanks to efforts such as the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition and the Angel’s Night campaign.
